Using RUMNUT in educational establishments

With the persistent poor state of funding in further education I appreciate that getting sufficient licensed copies on a network could be too expensive. For teaching use I would propose one of the following two solutions.

For basic training and teaching

  • One full copy is purchased (at 30% educational discount) and held on a lecturer's or other single computer. This copy can be used to formulate rations, for advanced small group teaching and to set up case studies and worked examples to run on the network.
  • The Teaching version of the software (copy on enclosed CD-ROM) is considered as shareware and can be run on as many machines within the college as you wish. The Teaching version is not time limited but the user cannot save rations, alter feed analyses etc.
  • If the user specific files (contact me for fuller details) are copied from the full version to the teaching copies then all the feed analyses, stored rations and user defaults will be copied across. Students can then access this information as case studies etc.
  • The blocking of any saving and alteration in the Teaching version ensures the students do not inadvertently alter the case study and it ensures it always presents the educational components that were originally proposed.

For advanced use and student-driven case studies

  • Purchase as many copies as will be needed to run on the network at any one time. These will be at a 30% educational discount and a subsequent 30% networking discount.
  • The network manager needs to constrain the network so that only the pre-arranged number of copies can be run on the network at any one time.
  • Users than have full access to the feed database and ration saving and can enter their own feeds, save them to file and save any rations.

Details of teaching version

  • Classed as 'share ware' so no constraint on making copies of the program as long as all the files in the Teaching sub-directory are distributed at all times.
  • Not time limited - no expiry date.
  • Fully featured with regards to ration formulation, printing, alternative protein systems etc.
  • Limitations are
    • User cannot save feeds to feed database.
    • User cannot alter feed analyses in database.
    • Access to 60 feeds rather than 990 feeds.
    • User cannot alter animal defaults.
