Ration trouble shooting

I am often approached by clinicians and others working in the field to give advise on rations that are being currently fed and with un-desirable consequences. I can offer various levels of support in such situations.
Ration appraisal
In such situations the advisor on the farm copies the current ration to me. I can look over this can make various assessments as to the likelihood of the ration being eaten and the balance of energy, protein and other nutrients.
Ration assessment
Where detailed analyses of all the feeds are available (esp the silage's and compound feeds) it is then possible to assess the ration using my own ration formulation software. This is a more detailed investigation of the current ration and can often identify problems that a simple appraisal might not.
Limitations of ration trouble shooting
Feeding dairy cows is an applied, clinical discipline. Without sight of the farm, the feeds, the feeding system and the on-farm management it is not possible to do more than support the on-farm advisor. Where a more detailed input is required I would recommend a farm visit or more systematic ration formulation
